Glass and Non-Toxic Air Fryers in Canada: Specifications Compared (2026)
Searches for "non-toxic air fryer" usually mean one thing: a cooking chamber that does not rely on a PTFE (Teflon-type) nonstick basket. There are three ways manufacturers get there: a borosilicate glass bowl, a ceramic-coated basket, or bare stainless steel. This guide compares the specifications of the glass and ceramic air fryers we stock in Canada for 2026. We compared manufacturer specifications; we did not cook with these units.
Three kinds of "non-toxic" air fryer
| Design | What touches the food | Pros | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass bowl | Borosilicate glass, often with a stainless rack | No coating; you can watch food brown; bowl doubles as a dish | Heavier and breakable; usually smaller capacity; halogen models brown differently |
| Ceramic-coated basket | Sol-gel ceramic coating, PTFE-free | Familiar drawer design; easy release when new | Coating wears with time; avoid metal tools and sprays |
| Stainless steel interior | Uncoated steel basket or racks | Durable, no coating | Food sticks more; few drawer models are fully uncoated |
Read the whole listing: a unit described as "stainless steel" may refer only to the outer housing, while the basket is a conventional nonstick. For the meaning of PFAS-free, PTFE-free and PFOA-free, see our cookware label guide.

How to choose
Capacity by household
For one or two people, 3.8–4.7 L (4–5 qt) is enough. Families of four usually want 5.7 L (6 qt) or more, or a large glass/halogen unit with racks. Single-layer cooking gives the crispest result, so the floor area of the basket matters more than the quart figure.
Power and your kitchen circuit
Most full-size air fryers draw 1,500–1,800 W on a standard 120 V outlet. Avoid running one on the same circuit as a kettle or toaster at the same time.
Look for a Canadian certification mark
Health Canada advises checking that electrical products bought online carry a recognized certification mark, such as CSA, cUL or cETL, showing they meet Canadian safety standards (Health Canada, buying electrical products online). Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority publishes a list of recognized marks. The mark must appear on the product itself, not only on the packaging, so check the rating plate on the unit when it arrives.
Who a glass air fryer is not for
- Cooks who want the crispest fries in the least time: compact drawer designs with strong fans usually win on speed.
- Kitchens with little counter space: glass and halogen units with 15–16 L bowls are bulky.
- Anyone who will put a hot glass bowl straight onto a cold, wet counter: borosilicate resists heat well, but sudden temperature shocks can still crack it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most non-toxic type of air fryer?
One where the food touches only glass or uncoated stainless steel. Check that racks and liners are uncoated too, since some glass models include a coated liner.
Are ceramic air fryer baskets safe?
Ceramic coatings are PTFE-free. Like any coating, they wear over time; use silicone or wooden tools, skip aerosol sprays and hand-wash when possible.
Do glass air fryers cook as well as basket air fryers?
They cook well, but many brown more slowly, particularly halogen designs. Shake or turn food halfway and expect a few extra minutes.
Did you test these air fryers?
No. This guide compares manufacturer specifications. Where a figure is missing from a listing, we say so rather than estimate it. Our air fryer guide for Canadian homes covers everyday use.
