Dutch ovens are sold in quarts, recipes are written for "a large pot", and Canadian kitchens think in litres. This guide converts the common sizes, matches them to household size and to what you cook most, and shows the range we carry, from 2.8 L (3 qt) to 7.5 L (8 qt) and up.
| Size (US quarts) | Litres | Feeds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–3 qt | 1.9–2.8 L | 1–2 | Side dishes, beans, small braises, a small loaf of bread |
| 3.5–4.5 qt | 3.3–4.3 L | 2–4 | Soups and stews for a couple, rice, a standard sourdough boule |
| 5–6 qt | 4.7–5.7 L | 4–6 | The all-rounder: chili, braised short ribs, a whole chicken up to about 2 kg, bread |
| 7–7.5 qt | 6.6–7.1 L | 6–8 | Batch cooking, pot roast, stock, freezer meals |
| 8 qt and up | 7.6 L and up | 8+ | Holiday crowds, large roasts, big batches of soup or sauce |
One US quart is 946 mL, so multiply quarts by 0.95 for litres. If you cook for four and only buy one pot, choose 5–6 qt (about 5 L): it handles everyday stews and soups, fits a whole chicken and bakes a standard loaf.
Round Dutch ovens sit evenly on a burner, which matters for browning meat before a braise and on induction, where the base should cover the cooking zone. Oval pots fit long cuts, such as a whole chicken, a pork loin or a leg of lamb, but heat less evenly on a round burner. Most households are better served by a round pot; add an oval if you roast whole birds often.
Brands describe the same pot in different ways. Le Creuset's 5.5 qt round, for example, is its 26 cm size and its 7.25 qt round is its 28 cm size; European brands often list centimetres first. Before buying, check two numbers against your kitchen:
Enamelled cast iron is heavy, and a full pot is heavier still. A 6–7 qt enamelled cast iron Dutch oven can weigh roughly 5.5–6.5 kg empty with its lid, plus several kilograms of food. If lifting is a concern, consider a smaller size, a lighter stainless steel Dutch oven such as the Calphalon tri-ply 5 qt ($233.86), or a 2-in-1 cast iron pot whose lid doubles as a skillet.
At time of writing we carry more than 180 in-stock Dutch ovens with a listed size, from 2.1 qt to over 11 qt. More than 80 of them are 5 or 6 qt, the most popular sizes. A few examples (prices in Canadian dollars, free shipping across Canada):

Health Canada advises against cooking or storing acidic foods such as stewed tomatoes or rhubarb in uncoated cast iron for long periods, and notes that enamel or ceramic glazes can be a concern if they contain lead or cadmium (Health Canada, safe use of cookware). Enamelled pots are the better choice for tomato sauces and long wine braises. Heat enamel gradually, avoid metal utensils that chip the coating, and let the pot cool before washing.
For two to four people, a 5–6 qt (4.7–5.7 L) round pot. It is large enough for stews, soups, a whole chicken and bread, and small enough to lift and store.
6–7 qt (5.7–6.6 L). Go to 7 qt or larger if you batch-cook for the freezer.
About 5.2 L. One US quart is 946 mL.
A round 4.5–6 qt pot for a standard loaf made with about 500 g of flour. Larger pots work, but the dough may spread more before it sets.
Cast iron and enamelled cast iron Dutch ovens work on induction. Stainless models need a magnetic base. Our induction compatibility chart explains how to check.
